The New York Islanders fired head coach Patrick Roy yesterday with four games left in their regular season and replaced him with Pete DeBoer. DeBoer got four years beyond this season.
Emily Kaplan: “Heard NY felt they were leaving Ilya Sorokin exposed and needed better defensive structure. There’s more term than Torts deal, so Isles are getting ahead of the cycle before someone else hired DeBoer this summer.”
Could there be more moves in store for the New York Islanders this offseason if they miss the playoffs?
NHL Media: Artur Staple, when asked if the coaching change is the first of several moves or if they are a piece or two away.

Dave Reid: “Yeah, Arthur, do you see this team being able to, I talk about, they don’t score. They need that one shooter. Now, every team would love to have that extra one shooter. But is this, do you think this team is maybe one player away, or is it going to be a full, we’ve got to get back to the defensive style that we’ve seen in the past?
Staple: “You know, I think being the hire, being a Peter DeBoer, who’s, who’s kind of, you know, one of those turnaround specialists, where he’s been to the finals with a couple of his previous stops in the first year. Been in the conference finals with a couple others. That this is not a guy who’s going to patiently wait and coach through a long rebuild.
So it says to me that Islanders from owner Scott Malkin and on down to Mathieu Darche, this organization felt the good vibes from this year. Felt like maybe they were closer than they thought they were at the beginning of the season, and they wanted to push through.
So I feel like it’s going to be an aggressive offseason for Mathieu Darche. They did add Brayden Schenn whose got term. They added Ondrej Palat still got a year. They added Carson Soucy, who’s a UFA. I think those guys were more for give them a little short-term kick. Schenn obviously will be here for a little while.
But I feel like there’s some areas, especially on their D core, they might need to shake things up and be aggressive. And maybe there’s a way to go, you know, Mathieu Darche will hear from him . But if we go into the offseason and there’s no playoffs, I imagine that he’s going to want to do some, some pretty serious tinkering with this roster.
If the Detroit Red Wings Miss the Playoffs Again, Would They Consider Trading Alex DeBrincat?
It’s, the core has been together a long time. He gave them this year to see if they could turn it around. And if they falter the way that they faltered in these last few weeks and then up missing, I think, I think there’s a chance that they could try to move out of quite a few bodies and kind of change the look of his team.
