The Kansas City Chiefs are lining up a sensational return for free agent Tyreek Hill after seeing their wide receiving corps decimated by injuries.
Hill spent six seasons with the Chiefs between 2016 and 2021, scoring 62 touchdowns and helping them win Super Bowl LIV.
He joined the Miami Dolphins in 2022 and enjoyed three hugely successful years before sustaining a horrific injury in September 2025 against the New York Jets and having to undergo surgery to repair a dislocated left knee and a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
He was subsequently released by the Dolphins in February but has been working his way back to full fitness and last week posted on X that it was “time to get off the couch and get to work.”
Injuries to Rice and Thornton bring Hill into focus for undermanned Chiefs
The Chiefs were already believed to be interested in Hill but their need has become greater after Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton were injured in Sunday’s 30-27 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Thornton suffered a dislocated left ankle in the act of making a 55-yard catch and is set for a spell on the sidelines while Rice left the game in the first quarter with a hamstring problem.
“It sucks that he hurt his ankle on that play, but it was a big play for us,” quarterback Patrick Mahomes said of Thornton. “It helped us go get the win. It’s tough because those guys put in so much work. I was in that spot last year. One play can change your season. You hope for the best, but at the same time you want to show him support.
“I know how it is when you’re in that position, and it’s like the world is closing in on you. He’s one of the best team-mates I’ve ever had.”
Kelce would love to have Hill at the Chiefs
Rice’s injury is not thought to be as serious but the immediate talk after the game was the potential for Hill to return to Arrowhead.
“I have no idea [if that would happen], but it’d be pretty cool,” added Mahomes.
Veteran tight end Travis Kelce said: “That’s out of my hands, but I know I’d love to have ‘The Cheetah’ back in this building.
“He’s a brother. He’s one of those people who, when he sets his mind to something, he usually delivers. You saw that with Miami, when all the haters were saying he couldn’t play and he went and had his best year. I’d be excited by what he could do [here].”
The Chiefs are reported to have reached out to Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus and a deal could move quickly this week.
