Canelo Alvarez attempts to reclaim his position atop the super-middleweight division later this month as he competes for the WBC super-middleweight world title against Christian Mbilli, and one 168lb titleholder has revealed that he is predicting a knockout win.
Canelo lost all four of his super-middleweight world titles when trumped by Terence Crawford last year, but the latter’s retirement saw each belt either claimed by – or reassigned to – alternate super-middleweight contenders, with Mbilli picking up the WBC crown.
Elsewhere, Osleys Iglesias got his hands on the IBF strap, Hamzah Sheeraz claimed and then vacated the WBO marble and Jaime Munguia has since become the WBA super-middleweight world champion, after defeating Armando Reséndiz – who was initially elevated to champion.
All eyes are now on Canelo at the end of the month, with each and every 168lber hoping to secure a lucrative shot at the Mexican superstar if he is able to overcome Mbilli.
Speaking to Ring Magazine, Canelo’s stablemate, former opponent and reigning WBA titleholder, Munguia, predicted a stoppage win for Alvarez, despite the fact that the four-division conqueror has not won inside of the distance since halting Caleb Plant in 2021.
“I think that Canelo is going to knock out Mbilli. I don’t know [what round] but he will knock him out.
“Yeah, [he is training harder than ever]. He is training good.”
Canelo-Mbilli is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 31, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with Munguia set to compete against Russia’s Nikita Zon on the undercard.
It is not yet known though if that bout will be sanctioned as a title contest, as the WBA did not initially approve it and instead ordered Munguia to take on Bektemir Melikuziev.
