In addition to Conroy, the Flames announced that President of Hockey Operations Don Maloney, Assistant General Manager and Senior Vice-President of Hockey Operations Dave Nonis, and Assistant General Manager Brad Pascall all signed two-year contract extensions. These contracts were signed at the start of the 25-26 season and run through the 2027-28 season.

NHL Rumors: What is the Direction for the Calgary Flames?

Assistant General Manager Peter Hanlon, Special Advisor to the General Manager Jarome Iginla, and Senior Director of Hockey Operations Mike Burke round out the Flames’ management group. So inking Conroy to an extension is essential, given Iginla’s return to the organization this season.

This is a good thing for the Calgary Flames.

Conroy has done some great work putting a young core together. Plus with you know who back in the fold the team needed to keep him around too. #flames https://t.co/fPvJDCy329

There had been reports earlier in the week asking why Craig Conroy hadn’t been signed to an extension, given that Don Maloney had publicly commented on the direction of the organization. Those comments about not looking to rebuild but to retool and remain competitive despite the start this season sparked outrage from the fanbase.

NHL Rumors: New Jersey Devils, and the Calgary Flames

Right before the American Thanksgiving holiday, reports came out about Craig Conroy, and the Flames were close to a two-year extension.

Hearing tonight that the Calgary Flames and GM Craig Conroy are making progress on a contract extension.

Been a lot of conversation about this locally the last few days…not sure when it will be finalized, but we are headed to that conclusion.

“I mean, obviously, I couldn’t be more proud to be the GM of the Calgary Flames and having the leadership group along with me,” Craig Conroy told FlamesTV. “We know we have some work to do, but we’re really looking forward to it. But for me and my family, it’s a great day.”

It has been a difficult start to the season for the Calgary Flames. They are not where they want to be after recording 96 points last season and falling short of the playoffs. There are many rumours surrounding the team, including Rasmus Andersson, Nazem Kadri, and Blake Coleman. Though Kadri isn’t going anywhere until he decides to leave, and teams may make an offer to the Flames, they can’t refuse.

NHL Rumors: Calgary Flames Not Trading Nazem Kadri Right Now

As for Andersson, teams always need a right-handed shooting defenseman. Andersson is focused on the season as well, trying to make the Olympics for Team Sweden. Given the market for defenseman, the Flames might be out of Andersson’s price range. However, if he feels he wants to be part of the solution and sees the Flames as a winner, he might stay. But if the team continues to struggle, teams from around the NHL will keep calling.

The pending UFA will draw significant interest from teams across the league, as Conroy and company face a difficult decision about his future with the organization. Not to mention, if they want to remain competitive, does it make more sense to keep Andersson and let the young players develop?

Should the Rasmus Andersson Situation in Calgary Been Resolved Already?

Despite reports of turmoil within the management group, Conroy has a vision for the group: building the team through drafting and development while maintaining a strong veteran leadership group. However, as Conroy says, these things take time.

“I think the one thing is the patience. You have to have patience,” Conroy said. “Everybody likes things nowadays instant, and it’s just not that way. You have to take your time and build it slowly and build it the right way. And I feel like that’s probably the biggest thing about building a team. We just can’t just rush to try to do something quick. We got to take our time and develop young players and bring them into the fold.”

Whether players want to admit these things are distractions or not, maybe this Craig Conroy extension is precisely what the Calgary Flames need to get back on track.
