Rob Lowe Gives St. Elmo’s Fire Sequel Update: ‘Really Getting Good’

Rob Lowe is ready to channel his inner William “Billy” Hicks once again in the St. Elmo’s Fire sequel.

“We’re working on the script, and it’s really getting good,” Lowe, 61, told People in an interview published on Sunday, June 29. “I think it’s super valid to revisit those characters that continue to mean a lot to people and watch them navigate this chapter of life, because arguably this chapter of life is every bit as interesting and fraught as — ‘What do I do when I get out of college?’”

The 1985 film followed a group of recent Georgetown alums attempting to find their own way in their early 20s. The star-studded cast included the likes of Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Andie MacDowell and more.

Nearly four decades later, Lowe teased that the sequel was on the horizon.

“We’ve met with the studio and I have been talking about doing it for about four months,” he told Entertainment Tonight in 2024, noting that the excitement around Brats “only added to the excitement around it.” (The 2024 documentary shed insight into the “Brat Pack” moniker coined by a New York Magazine journalist, referring to the group of actors who starred in classic coming-of-age films including St. Elmo’s Fire.)

He continued, “But it’s very, very, very, very, very early stages. So we will see.”

Lowe confirmed in February that the St. Elmo’s Fire sequel was in development.

“We’re putting together St. Elmo’s Fire 2. So we’re back working together…We’re gonna see what those people are doing at our ages now. This is a real thing,” Lowe said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live at the time. “I know. It’s great. It sounds like it could be a bit, but [you’d] also go, ‘Wait a minute, I’d see that.’ When we did the original, we were on the cover of Rolling Stone. Now we’ll be on the cover of AARP, but it’s still gonna be great.”

Rob Lowe says a sequel to St. Elmo’s Fire is in the works. Lowe, 60, teased the project during an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Monday, July 29.  “We’ve met with the studio and I have been talking about doing it for about four months,” the actor revealed of plans for a potential follow-up. In March, Lowe claimed that the entire group was game for the St. Elmo’s Fire sequel. “The script has to come in and we all have to like it but everybody wants to do it,” Lowe said on an episode of his “Literally with Rob Lowe” podcast at the time. “Everybody’s on board.”

When relaying the news to former Parks and Recreation costar Adam Scott, Lowe suggested that his pal could make a cameo in the sequel.

“I would do anything. I could be a waiter at the restaurant,” Scott said, to which Lowe replied, “You should be the waiter who’s really just milking it. Like, you should have moved on but you kind of like hanging out.”
