Muir is best known for helming the coverage on World News Tonight. In addition to being a leader in journalism, Muir has gone viral on TikTok multiple times thanks to countless fan edits.
In July 2025, Muir caused a commotion online after he posted a photo of himself taking in a summer day while on a boat. The broadcaster opted for a casual polo shirt and aviator sunglasses as he enjoyed time on the water.

Muir joined the network as an overnight news anchor in August 2003. He later became the anchor for World News This Morning. After working with the network for more than a decade, Muir was announced as Diane Sawyer’s replacement for World News Tonight in 2014.
During his time at ABC News, Muir has reported from various locations around the world including Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Ukraine, Tahrir Square, Mogadishu, Gaza, Guantanamo, Fukushima, Beirut, Amman and more. He has won multiple Emmys for his coverage of the news.

In January 2025, Muir faced backlash for his impromptu tailoring on his jacket while covering the Los Angeles wildfires. The journalist wore a yellow ABC News fire jacket that had clothespins in the back to give him a more tailored fit. Some fans defended Muir, arguing that the pins were meant to help combat the heavy winds. Muir did not address the controversy.

Muir and Ripa have been friends for years. The Live! cohost revealed that she and Muir connected after she tracked down his email address to praise him for his work.
“I immediately cracked into the ABC News system email – which you’re not supposed to use unless it’s for news,” Ripa said on a previous episode of Live! With Kelly and Ryan. “And I wrote, ‘Dude. You looked amazing tonight. Don’t know what was going on. Looked kinda dangerous where you are. But just wanted to let you know that you looked amazing. I had the volume down.’”
Since that moment, Muir and Ripa have formed a friendship, and Muir has appeared on her morning show multiple times.
