Ekitike injury ‘didn’t look good’, says Slot

It was a painful night for Liverpool.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot conceded Hugo Ekitike’s injury “didn’t look good” after the forward was taken off on a stretcher as the Reds exited the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

Ekitike was carried off on the half-hour mark at Anfield after going down off the ball. The Frenchman was in clear distress, with the injury potentially putting his hopes of featuring at the World Cup this summer in doubt.

Two second-half goals from Ekitike’s compatriot Ousmane Dembele ensured that Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League by PSG for the second successive season, his brace completing a 2-0 win on the night for the visitors, who prevailed 4-0 on aggregate.

Speaking after a game that condemned Liverpool to a trophy-less season, Slot told Amazon Prime Video Sport: “We got much more than we deserved last week by only losing 2-0, like last season. Also the same as last season today we got much less than we deserved. We should have won but it is from the quality of them why they don’t concede.”

Asked about Ekitike’s injury, Slot replied: “Not too good. We could all see it didn’t look good. Let’s wait and see what it will be. In the second half he went home and I haven’t seen him yet.

“As it seems to be, losing a player is something we have had many times this season but it is especially hard for him because you never want to be injured, especially at this time of the season.”

    Slot slams Liverpool penalty overturn

There was a moment of controversy in the second half when Alexis Mac Allister went down under the challenge of Willian Pacho and referee Maurizio Mariani promptly pointed to the spot, only to overturn his decision following a VAR review.

“If you look at our season I am completely not surprised because so many decisions have gone against us,” Slot added.

“For me it is quite simple, if the referee did not give a penalty the VAR would never have intervened.

“As I said I don’t think it is a surprise this season, not just the Champions League but also in the Premier League many decisions have gone against us.

“We couldn’t score a goal, we had many chances.”
